DefaultDNS settings

My ISP, Pipex has a Primary DNS of 158.43.240.4 and a secondary of 158.43.240.3.
My settings are totally different, Primary 190.44.0.12 and Secondary 190.44.0.13. Nevertheless everything works OK.
Server assigned IP address is 'ticked'.
Specify name server addresses is 'ticked'.
Curious, is it of any benefit to change my settings.

It probably won't aid you too much, and I would have thought that your DNS settings would be served to you via a DHCP server anyway. You could try setting them manually and see if you get an increase in look-up speed, but I doubt you would notice much.

Pipex has a Primary DNS of 158.43.240.4 and a secondary of 158.43.240.3
are these the external nameservers?

If you are auto assigned the ones you have then they should be fine

DefaultTo elaborate a little

Using run, winipcfg I see that the IP configuration is the correct Pipex one, namely 158.43.240.4.

My other settings in TCP etc (as given) have no resemblence to this, does this mean that they can be left blank, and are superfluous and have no effect.

ahh - winipcfg are the ones you are using,

in network properties you should have an entry called tcp over dialup adaptor - thats the settings for the modem.

the DNS configuration tab on the tcp over dialup should have 'disable dns' set - these come fro pipex (unless you want to override the ones given)

if you have other 'tcp over .....' listed they are network cards - which are best set to specify IP address (unless you have a dhcp server on your lan you would rather use).

hth

DefaultNetwork properties

In control panel, network gives the following info:
Client for Microsoft Networks
alcatel speedtouch usb adsl ppp
ndiswan->alcatel speedtouch usb adsl ppp
tcp/ip->dialup adapter.

Nothing is 'highlighted'.

Network in control panel gives no option to access properties, is the above what you meant.
Addendum:
Have ticked Server assigned etc blanking out the numbers.
Have gone on line and everything is working alright.
